Frequently asked questions

What does the board do?

Board members are responsible for Duty of Care, Duty of Loyalty, and Duty of Compliance. The board makes sure no laws are broken and money is spent as intended. We have a Shared Leadership Team to set the strategic plan and make our programs happen. In addition to providing oversight, board members are expected to volunteer alongside paid staff to implement programs and organizational strategies.

What are the term/expectations for board service?

Term: Board members serve for a minimum of two years, and can serve up to 3 consecutive terms (which can be extended by a vote of the board).

Attendance: There are 6 regular board meetings per year, one every other month. Board members may miss up to 2 meetings.

Donations: There is no minimum donation a board member must make. Board members are expected to make some monetary contribution that is significant to that board member.

Circle/committee service expectation: It is expected that a board member will be active on at least one circle or committee. This may involve up to one meeting a month, depending on the circle or committee.

What type of candidates are we looking for?

First and foremost we are looking for people with a passion for protecting open spaces in and around Kingston with the goals of improving biodiversity, people's access to nature, fostering a greater sense of community, and making a difference with regard to land equity, justice, and inclusion.

What skills/expertise are we looking for?

While we will consider all applicants who feel they can truly make a contribution, expertise in land law, corporate governance, accounting, fundraising, producing events, and/or database management, is most desirable at this time.
